Plywood, PAR + composite plastics · 2024
Festival Arch
Dynamic, playful and inclusive festival centrepiece.

PROJECT DETAILS
Project type: Community-led festival structure and public installation
Materials: Birch plywood, PAR timber and composite plastics
My role: Tender submission, community engagement, concept and technical development, fabrication and installation
Key processes: 3D CAD and visualisation, stakeholder presentations, technical drawing, engineering coordination, workshop fabrication, assembly, delivery, installation and de-installation
Commissioned for the Pendle Festival of Culture and the National Festival of Making, the Welcome Arch was developed by The Dual Works through workshops with local communities. I contributed from the initial tender and community engagement through concept development, stakeholder presentations and technical preparation. As an outdoor public structure, the design was developed with structural engineers to account for wind loading and safe use. My practical involvement included fabrication, finishing, delivery and repeated assembly, installation and de-installation at both festivals and its final community location. The project was longlisted for the 2025 MacEwen Award, recognising architecture for the common good.
Completed while employed by The Dual Works. Photography by Hayley Salter.
