Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Reshaping the Physic Garden with fabricated planters.

PROJECT DETAILS

Project type: Bespoke landscape furniture manufacture and installation
Materials: Treated timber
My role: Technical development, manufacture and on-site installation
Key processes: Interpreting technical drawings, design for manufacture, timber processing, chop-saw cutting, jig-assisted assembly, mechanical fixing, site preparation and levelling

Created for the reimagined Physic Garden at Birmingham Botanical Gardens, this project comprised a series of cruciform raised planters alongside bespoke benches and totems. Working from drawings supplied by the project team, I helped translate and adapt the designs for efficient manufacture before fabricating the timber structures in the workshop. Production involved processing long lengths of treated timber, accurate repeat cutting and jig-assisted assembly using mechanical fixings. On site, I contributed to preparing and levelling the ground before positioning and assembling the structures to form the framework of the new public garden.

Completed while employed by The Dual Works. Photography by the project team.
